The science of a good evening
Four scents, the molecules behind them, and what research from places like Harvard and MIT says scent can do to the way you feel.
How scent reaches you
The shortest road to how you feel
Smell is the sense with the most direct line to your feelings. When you breathe in a scent, the signal goes from your nose to the olfactory bulb and from there, by a short and fairly direct route, to the amygdala and the hippocampus: the parts of the brain that handle emotion and memory. As Harvard neuroscientist Venkatesh Murthy explains, that wiring is why smell and memory are so closely linked.1
It is also why a scent can bring a memory back more vividly than a photo can. In a brain-imaging study at Brown University, a personally meaningful scent lit up the amygdala more than any other cue, and people rated those scent-triggered memories as the most emotional.2 A candle doesn't just make a room smell nice. It sets the mood your brain will remember.
- The wax holds the scentSoy wax is made from soybean oil. It melts at a lower temperature than paraffin, so the pool of melted wax warms gently and lets the scent out slowly.
- The wick is the engineMelted wax climbs the cotton wick by capillary action, the same pull that draws water up a paper towel, and the flame turns it into heat and light.
- The heat sets it freeFragrance molecules sit locked in solid wax. As the pool melts, they evaporate into the room. That is why a candle smells stronger lit than in the jar.
Warm · creamy
Off the Clock
Warm, soft, slow.
For when the laptop is shut and you're not opening it again tonight.
The chemistry
Vanilla's signature molecule is vanillin, one of the most loved aroma molecules in the world. It is what makes vanilla smell sweet, creamy and familiar.
Sandalwood's warmth comes from santalols, large, heavy molecules that rise slowly and linger, which is why sandalwood feels soft rather than sharp.
Violet's powdery note comes from ionones, a family of molecules first made by chemists in the 1890s and still at the heart of violet scents today.
What the science says
In a study at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, patients waiting in an MRI scanner breathed either plain air or a vanilla-like scent called heliotropin. Those who found the scent pleasant reported about 63% less anxiety than those on plain air.3
Sandalwood is more surprising. In a controlled study, inhaled East Indian sandalwood oil made people more physically alert, while its main molecule, α-santalol, lifted how attentive and good-humored they felt.4 Calm, but not sleepy: the right mood for the start of your evening.
Violet is personal. Whether you smell β-ionone strongly or barely at all comes down to one tiny change in a single smell receptor gene, OR5A1. Some people find it beautifully floral; others hardly notice it.5

Deep · woody
Nothing to Prove
Deep, smooth, unbothered.
Warm, quiet, effortless. For the days you're not performing for anyone.
The chemistry
Oud, also called agarwood, is one of the most treasured scents in the world. It forms when the aquilaria tree protects itself from infection by filling its heartwood with a dark, fragrant resin.
That resin is rich in sesquiterpenes and chromones. When it is warmed, it releases smaller, sweeter aromatic molecules such as benzylacetone.6
Our oudh twist is a fragrance oil built around that deep, woody character, made smoother so it fills a room without taking it over.
What the science says
Researchers in Japan found that breathing agarwood oil vapor had a calming, sedative effect on mice, and that benzylacetone on its own did the same, even at very low amounts.6
This was animal research, so read it as a clue, not a promise. But it fits a very long human habit: agarwood has been warmed in homes and temples from India to Japan for centuries, for quiet, focus and slowing down.

Earthy · fresh
Rain Check
Earthy, cool, nostalgic.
That smell. The one that arrives a second before the first rain does.
The chemistry
The smell of rain has a scientific name: petrichor. It was named in 1964 by two Australian scientists, Isabel Bear and Richard Thomas, who found it comes from oils that plants release in dry weather, which collect in soil and rock until the rain sets them free.7
The deep, earthy part comes from geosmin, a molecule made by bacteria that live in soil. The human nose is remarkably sensitive to it, which is why you can smell rain coming.
Rain Check recreates that first-rain moment with a fragrance oil, so you can have it on any evening, monsoon or not.
What the science says
In 2015, engineers at MIT filmed raindrops hitting soil with high-speed cameras. They found that light rain traps tiny air bubbles that rise and burst into a fine mist, like the fizz in a glass of champagne. That mist may be how the scent of the earth reaches your nose.8
And the nostalgia is real science too. Smell signals travel almost straight to the brain's centers for emotion and memory, which is why one breath of rain can take you right back to a childhood monsoon.12

DND
Calm, clean, sleepy.
Phone face down. Do not disturb. Goodnight.
The chemistry
Lavender's calm comes mostly from two molecules, linalool and linalyl acetate. Linalool is one of the most studied scent molecules in the world.
Chamomile adds a soft, apple-like sweetness. Its name even comes from the Greek for “earth apple”.
Sandalwood's santalols give DND a warm base, so it smells like a cozy bedroom and not like a spa.
What the science says
At Kagoshima University in Japan, researchers showed that simply smelling linalool lowered anxiety in mice. The effect worked through the nose and the brain's GABA system, the same calming system that many anti-anxiety medicines act on.9
At the University of Minnesota, college students with sleep trouble who breathed lavender at night, alongside good sleep habits, reported better sleep quality than students who kept the same habits without lavender.10
A 2019 review of chamomile studies found it improved sleep quality, although most of those studies gave chamomile as a tea or extract rather than as a scent.11
In the stars just for fun
Virgo, ruled by Mercury, for every mind that won't switch off at night.
A note on the science
The studies here tested specific oils or scent molecules, often in a lab and some in animals. Our candles use fragrance oils made to recreate these scents. So please read this as the science behind each scent, not as a medical claim. A candle is not a treatment: if sleep or anxiety are hard for you, please talk to a doctor. The zodiac picks are just for fun.

Our story
A scientist who fell for candles
Hi, I'm Ridhima. I'm a scientist by training and a candle maker by heart, and Arambh is where the two finally met.
I studied environmental science, and the part I always loved most was the chemistry: why some molecules float across a room while others stay put, how a few degrees of heat change everything, how something you can't even see can change how a place feels. Most people look at a candle and see a candle. I see wax with a melting point, a wick that has to draw just enough fuel, and fragrance molecules waiting for the right moment to rise.
Arambh started on an evening I couldn't find the candle I wanted. Some were loud and flat. Some smelled lovely in the jar and of nothing once lit. So I did what scientists do. I started testing. Weighing, pouring, burning, taking notes, changing one thing, and doing it all again.
Every Arambh candle is that notebook turned into something you can light: 100% soy wax, a cotton wick and fragrance oil, weighed to the gram and poured by hand in small batches. Nothing is left to chance, and nothing cheaper sneaks in to save a rupee.
ĀRAMBH means “a beginning”. That is what I want each candle to be for you: the moment the day stops asking things of you, and the part that's yours begins. A little chemistry, a lot of care, and one small flame that lights up your whole world.

Your candle
What is it made of?
200 g of 100% soy wax, fragrance oil and a cotton wick, poured into a 250 ml amber glass jar with a black metal lid. The Candles page has the notes and the science behind each scent.
How do I light it the first time?
Let it burn until the melted wax reaches the glass all the way around, however long that takes. Wax has a memory: if you blow it out early, it will melt to the same small circle every time after and dig a tunnel down the middle.
How long should I burn it at a time?
Long enough for the melted wax to reach the glass, and no more than 4 hours in one go. Then let it cool fully before you light it again.
Why is my candle tunneling?
Usually because an earlier burn was too short. To fix it, wrap foil around the top of the jar, leaving an opening over the flame, and let it burn until the wax is level again. Then remove the foil.
Why is there black smoke or soot on the glass?
The wick is too long, or there's a draft. Put the candle out, let it cool, trim the wick to 5 mm and move it away from fans, open windows and air conditioners.
Why can't I smell it as much as I'd like?
A candle smells strongest once there's a full pool of melted wax, so give it time. Close the door in a big room, keep it out of drafts and keep the lid on when it's not lit, so the scent stays in the wax.
How do I put it out?
Gently place the lid on top, or use a snuffer. Blowing it out can spatter wax and leaves the wick smoking.
How do I look after it safely?
- Trim the wick to 5 mm before each light.
- Burn it on a heat-safe surface, away from curtains, children and pets.
- Never leave a lit candle alone, and don't move it while the wax is liquid.
- Stop when about 1 cm of wax is left at the bottom.
Can I reuse the jar?
Yes. Freeze it overnight, pop out the last of the wax, wash it in warm soapy water and use it for pens, a small plant or anything you like.
